Roblox has initiated one of the most profound restructurings of its functional and commercial architecture. With the launch of Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and the Roblox Plus subscription service, the platform is transitioning from a single, open environment toward a segmented ecosystem defined by verification levels and age. This evolution aims to professionalize tools for creators and brands while ensuring a secure environment for all users.
1. Audience Segmentation: Kids and Select Accounts
The new account architecture defines what a user can see, do, and purchase based on their developmental stage, effectively moving away from the concept of a "general audience."
- Roblox Kids (Under 9): This is the platform’s maximum-curation environment. Users only have access to experiences that have passed rigorous manual and automated safety audits. Social features are restricted to high-sensitivity filters or pre-established phrases, and advertising must strictly comply with international regulations (COPPA/GDPR-K).
- Roblox Select (Ages 9 - 15): This level acts as a flexible bridge. Here, parents can customize the balance between freedom and protection, toggling features such as voice chat or access to specific User-Generated Content (UGC) marketplaces. This is where experiences can begin to feature more complex mechanics and social interactions.
- Roblox Standard (16+): The system is designed to be evolutionary. Once a user reaches the age threshold or completes strict identity verification (a process that can be streamlined via Roblox Plus), the account transitions to a Standard Account. At this stage, automatic discovery restrictions are lifted, granting full access to the platform, including content rated for mature audiences (17+).
